June 9, 2018 – Lineras “Lenny” Torres, right-handed-pitcher from Beacon, NY and former St. Johns commit was selected in the compensation round of the 2018 MLB draft by the Cleveland Indians on June 4, 2018. He was the youngest prospect in this year's draft.
During his high school season with the Beacon Bulldogs, Torres finished with 85 strikeouts in 34 ⅓ innings with a 1.22 era, While averaging a 94/95 mph fastball topping out with a 99 mph fastball. Torres has received national recognition from Perfect Game, Prep Baseball Report, MLB.com and Baseball America, stemming from his showcases at the 2017 Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego, California and 2017 USA Baseball 18U Finals, where he made the 40-man roster.
Torres has worked closely with Extra Innings’ co-owner and former Minnesota Twins draft pick, Angel L. Lugo. We started to help develop his pitches and velocity since the age of 13, Lenny has been part of Coach Lugo's Top Gun program (3X Top Velocity).
“We are all really excited for Lenny,” said, Lugo. “We started his Development plan at the age of 13, Lenny was committed to achieving the goal, of being drafted in the 1st. But now is when the real work begins.” The next goal is the SHOW!!!
Torres is expected to graduate this coming June at the Dutchess Stadium and will be leaving to the Indian training camp shortly after.
